Best Lawyers lists are compiled via exhaustive peer-reviewed surveys of thousands of leading lawyers. Selected attorneys are recognized by their peers in the legal industry for their professional excellence. While preparing for the 30th edition of The Best Lawyers in America, more than 13.7 million votes were analyzed. For Ones to Watch in America, more than 2.4 million votes were analyzed, which resulted in more than 25,000 lawyers honored in the new edition.
Best Lawyers was founded in 1981 with the purpose of highlighting the extraordinary accomplishments of those in the legal profession. The process begins when attorneys are nominated for consideration. They are then divided by geographic region and practice areas and are evaluated by their peers on the basis of professional expertise. Those who receive high peer reviews undergo an authentication process to make sure they are currently practicing and in good standing. If the votes for a lawyer are positive enough for recognition in The Best Lawyers in America, that lawyer must maintain those votes in subsequent polls to remain in each edition.
